Exploring the Idea of Language Development

Language. When it comes to language I find it to be one of the vital expressions of life. Language is a way to widen your scope of knowledge when developed. Studying language development is important for educators and people alike. For the future educator in me, the comprehension of language development will come in great use. I will need the skills to develop the minds of the ones I teach with recourses in written, spoken, and the visual language (plus many more). Language is a gateway to many other subjects such as written math problems. The importance of study stretches across universally and is the foundation for many lessons taught.

Learning. For me as a young individual I see myself to always be a learner. For now, I hope to take all the information I can fit in my binder. I hope to learn about the language I can develop in the minds that have limited use of the expression. I wish to also expand my learning of all the different types of language development and the many ways to teach them.

Future job. When thinking about my future, I hope to apply my skills learned from this class. To have the ability to execute the ways to develop language would be powerful, a classroom filled with language occupied capsules. Gaining the knowledge of language and how it is developed would allow me to be a true benefit to my students and their success.

Introduction...A little bit about me!

I am officially a Graduate Student!!! Hi! My name is Ashley Szerba and I am attending the University of North Florida to continue my education. For those who do not know me, I am an eager student ready for a bright future. I have chosen this masters program to enhance my skills in the beautiful language of American Sign Language (ASL) and to follow my passion of helping those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. My experience with the language started in high school when I took my first ASL class, from there I fell in love. I have spent most of my life here and would call Jacksonville, Florida my hometown. I originally attended the University for my convenience and to stay close to my loved ones throughout my years as an undergraduate, however, I slowly learned that the University had a lot to offer.  This institution has provided me with many opportunities to gain knowledge of those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. I have been in classrooms with students who are using total communication and strict ASL. My classmates and professors in this program have been inspirational with their beaming passions to help others. When a passion meets a career it is a beautiful thing.

What are five interesting pieces about me?

  • I was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia
  • I am the middle child, blessed with two amazing sisters
  • I have ran three half marathons with the forth one planned for February next year
  • I am now an alumni member of the organization Zeta Tau Alpha
  • I am a Navy dependent, having lived up and down the east coast of the U.S. but have never even visited the west coast
